Philosophy of Execution
Every organization needs a 10 year vision, 3 year focus, and 1 year goals.
1 year goals are broken down into quarterly goals and monthly goals. These items are all quantifiable, and easy to measure and evaluate success or failure.
Monthly goals are augmented by Must Wins: qualitative or quantitative items that if not achieved, will dramatically impact the team’s ability to achieve its goals.
Weekly execution checks in on monthly goals and must wins. Progress against each goal is tracked, and each goal is given a qualitative score: red, yellow, green. Green means on track, yellow means some effort or tactic change may be required to achieve the goal, red means that effort or tactic change is required to achieve the goal. Any item in yellow or red status is discussed as a team, with a clear “back to green” plan established.
Daily huddles should be run at all team levels, with each team member empowered to communicate any road blocks to accomplishing their strategic goals.
Additional meetings can be established based on strategic rhythms, and must be aligned to the strategic dashboard. For example, a Product Team may run scrum to drive execution. This should be strategically aligned to the Monthly Goal Dashboard.
In addition to strategic executables, every role should have clear definition for what must be done to keep the lights on for the business.
